FOSS4G 2025 is being held in Aotearoa / New Zealand. I responded to the call for logo design proposals using a recreation of the FOSS4G SoTM Oceania design I submitted – https://iamadamsteer.com/portfolio/foss4g-sotm-oceania-2019-logo/ . This wasn’t successful at the time, however I like it a lot – so decided to refresh it for 2025.
The Koru motif, while specifically Polynesian and deeply important in Māori design and culture, is relevant to us all as a global community. It is a rendering of a spiral – a symbol common to many cultures representing cycles of life, connection, relationships, growth. In the context of FOSS4G, the use of a Koru aims to acknowledge where the event takes place, and whose land we meet on. It also represents a global connection of a diverse community; and speaks to the new life and relationships these events invariably bring.
The FOSS4G ribbon has been moved just a little, simplifying the design and representing the start of the spiral – the focal point around which we meet.
In this redesign process I also discovered some tools in Inkscape which have been there the whole time – the Koru curves are more fair, using a vertex editing tool which creates smooth curves for you! And as expected, I changed the road network inscribed on the Koru to Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland.
Will it become the mark of FOSS4G 2025? I don’t know… let’s see.
