Mapping static avalanche risk factors


A project to map terrain-based static features which contribute to avalanche occurrence, using popular backcountry ski destinations in New South Wales, Australia.

Here the key design problem is how to visualise slope classes using a commonly-seen color scale in snow safety – alongside other relevant terrain features. The technical achievement was developing these datasets from 900 square kilometres of lidar data! The feature image shows one popular destination, another is visualised below. Both are subsets of the same source map.
